All great empires need an emeny. There has to be someone that is not what you are like. Empires fail when there is no enemy. England was killing herself with every blow against Germany.
If we view Capitalism as an Empire, then it's enemy is the state of being poor. It's not a group of people or a nation. Capitalism would not make every one rich if it had the choice. The human struggle is to contain the beast that rises from our less civilised animal intstincts. Capitalism is an accepted outlet for the intincts. But it is becoming, or has always been, too big to control. Society sees the need to step in and scale it back, but with little effect. It is a thing composed from the minds of a driven individuals, so it will always find a new way to grow. Chopping off its many heads. Is this a new development in human history, or has it always been seen as a problem by some people whose voices haven't been documented in the tiny portion of the 'general' thoughts of the population that we have seen, or have access to; it is possible that there have always been a priviliged few, even in the smallest of societies, like a tribe, or a family. Our current exposure to what all parts of the world are like at the moment, through the internet, has us comparing our way of life with what we see as the best way of life. The standards become a lot higher. The internet has created a new type of slave for modern capitalism - the driven young technical institute girl, the teens in Indonesia admiring the fashion of American girls. A bigger army of worker ants to replace the displaced mechanical workers, pushed out of their jobs by the brutal efficiency of machines. The internet has actually hepled capitalism, and this is in spite of any of the biggest 'movements' on ithe internet that bring people with better intentions together. Anyway, our life on the internet has us all posting our own version of the general opinion, particularly on Facebook, statistically the second most visited website, behind Google, the homepage and dashboard of the internet. But general opinion is formed by general opinion, which is very easy to manipulate (your writer assumes).
